Existing spaces appeared as a series of separate spaces and floors. The design focuses on connecting floors physically and visually while tying the interior to existing exterior terraces. A curving plaster-clad stair was created to contrast the straight lines of the base building. Heating elements which hindered access to the exterior were relocated and door openings enlarged to allow for ease of circulation. The removal of dropped ceilings created volume while also allowing for the building’s concrete structure to be exposed. The architecture is that of exposed concrete ceilings, character grade wood, and plaster in various finishes. A minimal stone palette of Petit Granit limestone was installed in multiple finishes.
The building’s existing cast-in-place concrete ceilings were exposed and refinished. Patinated brass light fixtures were designed and fabricated to be inserted directly into holes created by core drilling the concrete structural slabs.
Petit Granit limestone was selected for its versatility and used throughout. Stone slabs were given unique surface treatments. The finishes—honed, leathered, and sandblasted—were applied for function and visual depth.
