SoHo Apartment
New York, New York
2018
A previous renovation of this SoHo apartment concealed many of the bones of the building, making the space feel spartan and generic. Through the removal of shelving, soffits, and unnecessary additions from renovations past, the loft was stripped back to its original details: wooden beams and columns, brick walls, and exposed sprinkler lines. A bronze countertop with integral sink caps a new millwork island at the center of the open living area. Existing white oak floors were stripped and refinished to their natural color, while walls were treated with a textured plaster to further ground the space and reveal raking light. An ancient Roman marble tub from the previous renovation was reused in the new primary bathroom. The reimagined loft sets a warm, utilitarian stage for the client’s impressive collection of mid-century furniture and design objects.
The kitchen island is designed as a piece of furniture. A bronze countertop integrates a sink, sponge holder and bowl with a white oak paneled base. Material mockups were commissioned to study expressed joinery corner details and the counter’s patinated finish, unlacquered so as to age with use.
