Prospect Heights Brownstone
Brooklyn, New York
2015
This Prospect Heights brownstone was converted into a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) building in the 1950s, and the condition was in significant disrepair. Historic elements were restored in select areas, including the building facade and interior moldings, while contemporary elements were inserted elsewhere in the form of kitchen and bathroom millwork. By enlarging existing openings, an open floor plan was created without losing a sense of separate rooms. Materials consistent with the history of the building were selected—American white oak and Italian white marble. An eclectic mix of collected furniture, objects, and art define the interior.
Structural beams salvaged from the renovation were reconfigured into side tables and art pedestals. Each table is made of four beam sections, with oversized joints to allow for material expansion. The pattern of the wood checking was embraced and arranged with intention.
