Philadelphia Loft
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
2024
The site, originally an 1800’s knitting mill, retains many original elements from two centuries prior. This renovation emphasizes the loft’s history through a symphony of restoration and juxtaposition.
The existing structure included 4 steel beams, brick masonry walls, and solid wood joists—creating a framework around which architectural additions are organized. These insertions, distinct from the existing fabric of the open factory, create clear programmatic delineations.
An interplay of new and old is on display throughout. Restored factory windows illuminate generous living spaces. Original building elements flank a new courtyard. A metal-clad addition perches atop the preserved masonry shell. These various moments are unified through a modern stair which weaves through the center of the structure and filters light through the home. The interior furnishings balance vintage finds, period pieces and contemporary selections. Local materials are utilized frequently to further reinforce connections between history and place.
Efforts were made to incorporate, restore, and refinish the building’s existing wood roof and floor structure. Original joists were exposed throughout the first and second levels providing organic and textured ceilings throughout the loft.
