Crown Heights Brownstone
Brooklyn, New York
2019
Situated on a deep lot, the brownstone was bounded by a side and rear alley. The old building, carved into a series of tiny rooms, was simplified and reorganized. Natural daylight was let in everywhere. New openings in the rear wall provide a new double-height lounge space with a direct connection to the garden. Waxed plaster walls throughout reflect light and the dynamic color of the sky.
A blackened ash dining table was designed to mimic the curves throughout the house. Ash was chosen for its ability to take a dark stain and for the scale of its grain pattern. The wood boards were wire brushed to reveal additional texture in the finish.
Omani limestone was used throughout the project. Blocks of the material were selected for their unique patterning and were carved into a set of nesting tables. Reminiscent of the moon, the tables were nicknamed “lunar tables.”
